The Cretto di Burri, also known as the Grande Cretto, is a monumental land art installation by Italian artist Alberto Burri, situated on the ruins of the ancient town of Gibellina in Sicily. In 1968, the Belice earthquake devastated Gibellina, leading to its reconstruction approximately 20 kilometers east of the original site. As part of the town's artistic revival, Burri transformed the ruins into a vast concrete canvas, creating a whitewashed expanse of concrete slabs that mirror the original city's layout. This "frozen sea" of concrete serves as a powerful tribute to the lost town, encapsulating its memory and the collective grief of its inhabitants. The project commenced in 1984 and, after periods of funding challenges, was completed in 2015, coinciding with Burri's centenary. The Cretto not only commemorates the past but also invites visitors to reflect on themes of resilience, memory, and the intricate relationship between art and collective identity.
