Castello di Miramare, built-in 1856 and located in Trieste, Italy, was given to Archduke of Austria, Ferdinand Maximilian, and his wife, Princess Marie Charlotte from Belgium, by Napoleon III, after Maximilian agreed to rule Mexico. While trying to bring reconciliation to a devastated country, Maximilian was taken a prisoner and eventually executed by the rebels of Mexico. During these years, Charlotte spent her time in the castle, without any knowledge about her husband's state, and slowly developed mental imbalance and sanity loss. Legend has it that Charlotte spent days and nights on the balcony of the castle, facing the sea and gazing at the horizon, drowning in loneliness, uncertainty, and insanity.
The photography project tells mutely Charlotte's story and focuses on the material absorption of the sadness of the place's history; The castle exterior and surroundings simulate Charlotte's viewpoint in her long hour's longing for her husband. Despite the expanse, the observer can relate to the psychological entrenchment and melancholy, and experience an immovable state of time due to the unusual natural lighting.
