The stone pine (Pinus pinea) has been a defining feature of the Mediterranean landscape for over 6,000 years. Cultivated since ancient times, its pine nuts were an important trade item, and its tall, unique presence has long been associated with the city of Rome. In ancient Roman culture, the tree was more than just a familiar sight planted along the Roman roads—it carried deep symbolic meaning, representing immortality, strength, and resilience. The Romans saw the stone pine as a symbol of endurance, its evergreen needles embodying eternal life. Often planted near temples and sacred sites, it was considered a guardian, offering protection and a spiritual connection to the divine. With its deep roots in the soil and protracted cycle of life, the trees symbolize a connection to the past and a powerful storytelling accumulated over time. The projects explore the symbolism of the passage of time, abstract collective memories, and the feelings they arise. Each tree, drawn slowly and with attention to detail, reveals a unique character, spirit, and story silently witnessed during the last centuries. Each tree holds its own narrative—that can only be imagined.
